Estimating Tropical Cyclone Intensity from Infrared Image Data

چکیده
This paper describes results from a near-real-time objective technique for estimating the intensity of tropical cyclones from satellite infrared imagery in the North Atlantic Ocean basin. The technique quantifies the level of organization or axisymmetry of the infrared cloud signature of a tropical cyclone as an indirect measurement of its maximum wind speed. The final maximum wind speed calculated by the technique is an independent estimate of tropical cyclone intensity. Seventy-eight tropical cyclones from the 2004–09 seasons are used both to train and to test independently the intensity estimation technique. Two independent tests are performed to test the ability of the technique to estimate tropical cyclone intensity accurately. The best results from these tests have a root-mean-square intensity error of between 13 and 15 kt (where 1 kt ’ 0.5 m s) for the two test sets.

Assessing Hurricane Intensity Using Satellites
Tropical cyclones spend most of their life cycle over the tropical and subtropical oceans. Because of the lack of in situ data in these regions, satellite observations are fundamental for tracking and estimating the intensity of these storms for real-time forecasting and monitoring climate trends. This chapter reviews methods for estimating tropical cyclone intensity from satellites, including ...
متن کاملA Multiple Linear Regression Model for Tropical Cyclone Intensity Estimation from Satellite Infrared Images
An objectively trained model for tropical cyclone intensity estimation from routine satellite infrared images over the Northwestern Pacific Ocean is presented in this paper. The intensity is correlated to some critical signals extracted from the satellite infrared images, by training the 325 tropical cyclone cases from 1996 to 2007 typhoon seasons. To begin with, deviation angles and radial pro...

This is the first year of a new grant. As such, I will briefly re-state the long-term goals. I am continuing research from my previous ONR grant on estimating the theoretical limits to tropical cyclone track errors, but with an emphasis now on distinguishing between overall track errors, and position and timing errors at landfall. My previous ONR grant showed a potential further halving of the ...
متن کاملAn environmentally forced tropical cyclone hazard model
A physics-based statistical stochastic system is developed for estimating the long-term hazard of rare, high impact landfall events globally from ensembles of synthetic tropical cyclones. There are three components representing the complete storm lifetime: an index-based genesis model, a beta-advection track model and an autoregressive intensity model. All three components depend upon the local...

The Meteorological Research Institute (MRI) of the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) developed a new method for estimating tropical cyclone (TC) minimum sea level pressure (MSLP) from TC warm core intensity as observed using the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A (AMSU-A). This approach is based on regression between TC warm core intensity data obtained from AMSU-A 55-GHz band brightness temper...
